These people came because they had everything in their old homes, but they wanted something new to try out were scientists, philosophers, spiritually enlightened.
In England they tried to do different types of work, but were limited. So they came to America looking for more freedom to experiment and experience new things and create a different community with which to interact and to live in harmony. Even when they did not know where they were going or what they would face in their new environment, they continued just the same and came to America. Even in their new place they were not looking for comfort or convenience, but they wanted to have the freedom to think , act, and create new society.
Example: My father wanted me to go with the family to Africa to start a new business venture doing automobile parts manufacturing. However, I wanted to study in America. So I made arrangements to borrow money from my friends in America to pay for my education studying computer science. The condition was that I must pay them interest or I would not take the loan.
I began my studies in computer science at Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri. I completed the course in only nine months. Subsequently, I moved to Chicago to try out what I had learned. It was in Chicago that I met Mr. Kelly. Because of the slowdown in the space program and the returning Vietnam Vets, work was hard to find. I had been looking for work in any company that had any use for computer experts. After we had discussed my options, he invited me to go into the computer hearing aid service with him. He asked me how much I wanted in salary and I said, “I need bread and butter.” The agreement was signed. We worked together for four to six months. Then we found out, due to my Indian accent that the customers had difficulty understanding me because they were also senior citizens who were hard of hearing. So Mr. Kelly and I agreed to not go in the business after all. We decided I should find a new source of income.
